Text Box: New Rozashi Classes

In Japan the chrysanthemum is most revered.  It symbolizes beauty and elegance.  It is part of the collection of plants known as the Four Gentlemen.  The Four Gentlemen are plum, orchid , mum ,and the bamboo. The Japanese work for chrysanthemum is kiku. The word was introduced into Japan pre Nara period.  In Japan there was a focus on its medicinal qualities.  Certain varieties are still used in Asian herbal medicine today.

The Japanese interest in the mum expanded to poetry, as the flower gained the honor of being one of the symbols of autumn.  It also became a symbol of the Japanese imperial family.  The flower is also used in commoners’ family crests

The flowers floating in running   water is known as nagare kiku or kikusui.

The mums in our piece are worked in the line stitch, the irregular, satin, and ichi dan and san dan straight stitch.  The forefront flower is the darkest color while the two receding mums have lighter colors.  The leaves are worked in ni dan straight and the line stitch.  The water lines are worked in line stitch.  The background is worked using the ni dan step stitch.  All stitches are traditional to Rozashi.
